Mylodon is an extinct genus of ground sloth from southern South America. At 3–4 m long and 1–2 tonnes, it was one of the largest mylodontids. Mylodon darwinii is named in honour of Charles Darwin, who unearthed its first fossilized remains — a jaw bone — at Punta Alta, Argentina, in September 1832, during the voyage of HMS Beagle.
